I quickly test code on different OSes – python work is more easily done in a unix shell or I use it as a mock server.

VMs through VMWare: Whenever I am in a Windows environment, I create different VMs for various purposes.Octave is the free alternative, and while it offers a good platform to learn, it is much weaker mostly in terms of packages available. It has extremely easy vector and matrix calculations, as well as very useful and focused packages for different sub-fields – image/signal processing, designing controllers, etc. MATLAB/ Octave: MATLAB is very useful for analysis focused work.I tend to operate using the command line, vim, and sublime text for longer code. Sublime Text: For most development in any language on a Linux platform such as Ubuntu, I use IDEs far more rarely. If you’re used to this IDE style, you can also do C++ through CLion (produced by the same company). Very customizable, has relatively strong support, a great community edition and many plugins such as the ability to liveshare while coding.

Visual Studio (Community): Used for all c++ software development.

Alternatives include Eagle, OrCAD, Altium and many others. I’ve used it on the job and for personal hobby projects. Despite some downsides (mostly in terms of UX, not lack of features), it does its job very well.
